90th Lions Clubs International Convention - Chicago
Seven members of the Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Clubs attended the
90th Lions Clubs International Convention held in Chicago from July 2-6, 2007.
The attendees were: Lions Joe and Diana Reyes, Marilyn and Orly Liwanag,
Jess and Susan Galvez, Bernie Olsen and Efren Santos. Lion Lilia Narciso
registered at the Convention but could not attend the convention proceedings.
7th Annual Lions Clubs International Performance Festival
The Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club performed a colorful native
dance, La Jota during the 7th Annual Lions Clubs International Performance
Festival held at McCormick Place on July 3, 2007. Our Barangay Leo Club
also contributed a modern Hip Hop Dance. Both dances were warmly
applauded by the international audience. The La Jota Dance participants
were: Evelyn Sibulo and Henry Kare, Efcy Formacion and Jess Galvez,
Diana Reyes and Joe Reyes, Susan Galvez and Rudy Samson, Zeny
Acierto and Bob Tolentino, Marilyn Liwanag and Jun Fajardo, Freda
Marzan and son, Adeline Fajardo and Orly Liwanag.
Melvin Jones Fellow Luncheon
Melvin Jones Fellows Efren Santos, Marilyn Liwanag and Jess Galvez
attended the International Convention Melvin Jones Fellow Luncheon
on July 5, 2007 at McCormick Place. The luncheon was attended by
more than a thousand MJ Fellows.
First Membership Meeting on 07-07-07
President Jun Fajardo called his first membership meeting on a magical
date of 07-07-07 with 21 members present at the Glendale Lakes Golf
Club. On this magical date, Pres. Jun Fajardo welcomed a new member
Tomas C. Rivera sponsored by Lion Ben Esteva.
Eastern Region II Training Session

Camp Lions 50th Anniversary Celebration
Six club members - Lions Joe Reyes, Marilyn Liwanag, Susan Galvez,
Orly Liwanag, Efren Santos and Jess Galvez - attended the Camp Lions
50th Anniversary celebration at East Bay Camp in Bloomington, IL,
July 20, 2007. The six members joined 21 Bartlett Club Lions at the
Bartlett Club-sponsored bus ride to East Bay Camp. The 50th anniversary
celebration drew more than 250 Lions and Lionesses representing
different district clubs in the state.
Reynoldswood Camp Lions Open House
PP Joe Reyes and Sec. Jess Galvez attended the Open House at Camp
Lions Reynoldswood in Dixon, IL last August 3, 2007. They joined the camp
tours conducted by camp counsellors and met with District Gov. Ron
Ron Fangusaro and Lady Elizabeth who enjoyed the activities and festivities
presented by the campers.
LIF Directors Meeting
Club secretary Jess Galvez, who joined Gov. Ron Fangusaro's cabinet as
Camp Lions Coordinator for District 1J, attended the first LIF Directors
Meeting in Bloomington, IL last August 5. Lion Jess participated in PDG Dick
Sellers' State Coordinators' Committee plan next year's Open House at the
three Camp Lions - Camp Dubois, East Bay Camp and Reynoldswood Camp.
First Eastern Region II Meeting
Nine officers and members attended the first Eastern Region II meeting on
August 9, 2007 at the Bloomingdale Golf Club. The Barangay delegation liked
the new format of the zone meeting and is looking forward to the next meeting.
Annual Picnic in the Park
The annual Picnic in the Park held at Spring Creek in Bloomingdale, IL, on
August 11, 2007, was a rollicking success. Special thanks to 3rd VP Rusty
Pineda who made sure the barbecue pit was loaded and sizzling with mouth-watering slices of marinated pork, to Susan Galvez picnic chair, who planned,
shopped for supplies and provided games and entertainment and made sure
expenses did not go overboard, to Bobby Tolentino for bringing the sweetest
bushels of corn, the reddest and sweetest watermelons from the Farmers
Market, to Joe and Diana Reyes who ordered the menu of appetizing Filipino
dishes, to Jake Retuta, Henry and Christine Kare who provided extra helping
hands at the barbecue pit and at the chow line.
Annual Glendale Heights Village Parade
22 Lions and Leos marched at the annual Glendale Heights Village Parade last
August 25. A Sebring convertible headlined the Barangay Lions Club contingent,
driven by volunteer driver Eastern Region II chairperson, Lion Perry Knutson.
Candy Day Jamboree 2007
Four officers attended the Candy Day Jamboree last August 30. The group picked
up six boxes of candies for the annual Candy Day street campaign on October
12-13. Attendees were Pres. Jun Fajardo, 2nd VP Marilyn Liwanag, Treasurer Efren
Santos and Jake Retuta.
Glendale Heights Village International Day
The Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club participated in Glendale Heights annual
International Day, a celebration of diversity in the village community on
September 9 at Camera Park in Glendale Heights. The club participated in the
parade of different ethnic groups, fashion show of native costumes and performed
a colorful native dance called La Jota. The La Jota dancers were: Christine and
Henry Kare, Freda and Jun Fajardo, Zeny and Greg Acierto, Diana and Joe Reyes,
Susan and Jess Galvez.
Karaoke Nite Fundraising
On Friday, September 21, the club held a Karaoke Nite fundraising at the
Philippine-American Cultural Foundation Center in Addison, IL. Some 30
guests enjoyed an evening of karaoke singing and dancing. 3rd VP Rusty
Pineda chaired the karaoke fundraising. |
Used Eyeglasses Sorting and Counting
Twelve volunteers showed up at the club's sorting and counting used
eyeglasses last Sat, September 22 at PP Joe Reyes' residence in West
Chicago. The club has an old metal U.S. mailbox installed in a strip mall
by Jewel as an eyeglass collection center. The volunteer group counted:
- 920 used prescription eyeglasses
- 215 used sunglasses
- 617 eyeglass cases
- 160 lenses (no frames)
- 5 eye goggles
- 6 hearing aids
- 3 used cell phones
The following volunteers helped with the sorting: Joe and Diana Reyes,
Jun Fajardo, Christine and Henry Kare, Susan and Jess Galvez, Freda
Marzan, Lilia Narciso and Jay Cadiz.
Five boxes full of used eyeglasses will be turned over to Lion Mario Gumino
at the next Eastern Region meeting on November 14.
Walk Your Child To School
The Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club sponsored the 2nd "Walk Your
Child To School" program at Glen Hill Elementary School, Friday, October 5.
More than 200 school children walked to school with their parents, enjoyed
an early morning breakfast of sandwiches, cookies, health bars, fruits and
fruit juices prepared by the Lions. A lively get-together with the parents and
teachers was held at the gym, with the school staff introducing and thanking
the Lions Club for sponsoring the 2nd "Walk".
Annual Charity Golf Outing
The annual Charity Golf Outing was off to a bright and sunny start at the links
in Glendale Lakes Golf Club last Sunday, October 7, 2007. More than 40
players teed off. Grilled lunch, hearty dinner, cash prizes and trophies to the
winners, were part of the day's fun and enjoyable golf outing.
Annual Lions Candy Day
More than 20 volunteer Lions donned the distinctive yellow jacket for the
annual two-day Candy Day street campaign on October 12-13, Fri-Sat. In
lieu of the dusty and hazardous road widening on Army Trail and Bloomingdale
Rd, the Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club volunteers took to the busy
North Ave and Bloomingdale Rd crossing for their street campaign.
Fundraising Trip to Horseshoe Casino, Indiana - October 27
29 high rollers enjoyed a 1 hour ride on a luxury tourist bus to Horseshoe
Casino in Hammond, Indiana for a three-hour wagering at the gaming tables.
The round trip luxury bus was provided free by the Casino. Passengers
donated $15 each to the club for the ride. The Casino provided a $7.00
coupon for a $14.00 lunch buffet for those who wanted to sample the rich
lunch buffet. The club netted more than $600 for the 5-hour fundraising trip.
Another casino trip is planned by chairperson Lion Ben Esteva in February,
2008, who planned the successful and fun casino trip to Horseshoe.
Peace Poster Awards Day - November 10
More than 50 imaginative and artistic entries from Glenside and Marquardt
Middle Schools in Glendale Heights, IL, were entered in the annual Peace
Poster Contest sponsored by The Glendale Heights Barangay Lions Club
on a timely theme 'Peace Around The World'. Vice District 1J Governor
Nancy Rex was the guest speaker. Cash prizes were awarded to the two
first prize winners, Samreen Hasan from Marquardt Middle School and
Maria Zigas of Glenside Middle School.
Parents, students, school teachers and principals, School Direct 15
Superintendent Dr. Loren May and School District 16 Superintendent
Dr. James White attended the awards program. Peace Poster Committee
Chairperson Lilia Narciso and First VP Marilyn Liwanag staged the successful Peace Poster Awards Day.
Domino's Pizza franchise owner, Nicholas Christoforakis donated pizzas
for the reception after the program. Mr. Christoforakis has been a sponsor
of the Peace Poster Contest for the last two years.
Second Eastern Region II Meeting - November 14
The following club officers attended the second Eastern Region II Meeting
on Wed, November 14 at the Bloomingdale Golf Club: Pres. Jun Fajardo,
1st VP Marilyn Liwanag, 2nd VP Bobby Tolentino, Treasurer Efren Santos,
Secretary Jess Galvez, Diabetes Awareness Coordinator Susan Galvez
and Immediate Past President Joe Reyes.
